> Abstract

What about the UseIT program have you benefited from most?

I have benefited most from the learning of an entire new programming language. Having almost exclusively worked with C++ at school, I had very limited experience with Java before this summer. Despite this, my fellow interns and plenty of Google searches have made learning the new language a breeze.

What is your overall impression of the facilities and equipment?

The facilities offered to us in the computer lab have been more than ample. The machines are very up-to-date and incredibly hassle-free. Also, having our workplace in such an open environment (100% cubicle-free) has really helped boost collaboration amongst interns.

What about the friendships you’ve made while staying here?

The friends I have made while here have been incredible. It has truly been a joy to live and work with the other interns. Also, friendships made with the other residents in our apartment have made this an awesome summer.

Has this program influenced or affected your plans for a career?

This program has really made me consider a career in the earthquake technology field. The fusion of computer science and geology is enjoyable to me, and this internship has shown me the possibilities available for a career.

What have you done in the UseIT program this summer?

My contribution to the UseIT program has been working on a revolutionary way of importing text labels from files. The new method allows users a greater deal of flexibility when formatting files for displaying. The concepts used for doing so have led to incredibly helpful possibilities for changes in several other aspects of the program.
