> Abstract

What was your favorite part about your UseIT experience?

My favorite part of the UseIT program has been working with and
getting to know all of the awesome interns this summer.

What about the UseIT program have you benefited from most?

I have gotten a lot of experience programming and working on a
relatively large software project with a large team. I have also
learned much about earth science as I had very little previous
knowledge.

What would you recommend to future UseIT interns?

Spend time getting to know your fellow interns. While the work itself
is rewarding, hanging out with your co-workers can be great fun!

What is your overall impression of the facilities and equipment?

The computers and other equipment available to us is excellent. Most
of the computers are very fast and have dual screens.

What is the atmosphere or working environment like?

The working environment is laid back, and actually seems more like
friends collaborating on a project than a strict work environment. I
find it to be a very effective atmosphere.

What about the friendships you’ve made while staying here?

I've made some great friends this summer and hope to continue knowing
them. We've had some great times hanging out and working together.
The field trips we went on were also great.

What have you done in the UseIT program this summer?

This summer I worked on several plugins for SCEC-VDO: I added several
features to the "Surface Plugin" to allow users to more easily add
surfaces and images to their scenes. I added live-updating recent
earthquakes to the "Earthquake Catalog Plugin." I also created a
"Location Plugin" which points out your location on the map based on
your coordinates or a street address.
