FEMA-Sponsored Earthquake Safety Workshops for Teachers

Tremor Troop workshop (E436), June 26-30, 2000
For teachers in grades K-6

Seismic Sleuths workshop (E439), July 10-14, 2000
For teachers in grades 7-12

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is offering earthquake education workshops for K-12 teachers at its Emmitsburg, Maryland Emergency Management Institute. These workshops include science background lectures and discussions on the nature of earthquakes, basic seismology, and general geology. Breakout sessions, led by adjunct faculty teachers (who have already participated in the workshop and implemented the curriculum in their own class), present teachers with hands-on exercises and lessons plans suitable for use with the appropriate grade levels. A half-day trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield allows participants to both enjoy the local history and to see geologic aspects of the beautiful area where the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Triassic Lowlands geologic provinces come together. Discussions are also presented on earthquake and general disaster preparedness for schools, with in-house sessions presented by professionals dealing with emergency planning and counseling issues. Teacher-tested course materials include either the FEMA Tremor Troop or Seismic Sleuths workbooks, containing geologic and seismologic background information for teachers plus all hands-on exercises for K-6 or 7-12 teachers and students.

These courses are offered to teachers who are willing to update their backgrounds in aspects of earthquakes affecting schools and who are willing to take their learning experience back to the classroom and to other teachers. FEMA provides transportation and lodging reimbursement. The facilities at Emmitsburg, about one and one-half hours north of Washington D.C., allow for learning and recreation in a college-style atmosphere.
