SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE CENTER
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY
The Southern California Earthquake Center and the U.S. Geological Survey will host a one-day seminar/workshop on deep structure of the Los Angeles region, to be held on April 21 at UCLA. The seminar/workshop will concentrate in three areas where data has been or will be collected by the Los Angeles Region Seismic Experiment (LARSE):
1) Santa Monica area, the region of exaggerated shaking produced by the Northridge earthquake. In 1999, in LARSE II, seismic-imaging data will be collected along high-resolution profiles in this area.
2) LARSE Line 2. This line extends northward from San Clemente Island, through the Santa Monica Mts, through the Northridge epicenter, through the Transverse Ranges, across the San Andreas fault, and into the western Mojave Desert. In 1994, in LARSE I, airgun data were collected along this line. During the period Sept. 1998-Feb. 1999, in the first phase of LARSE II, teleseismic and local-earthquake data will be recorded along this line. During October 1999, in a second phase of LARSE II, explosion data will be collected along this line.
3) LARSE Line 1. This line extends northeastward from San Clemente Island, through the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley basins, through the San Gabriel Mts, across the San Andreas fault, and into the Mojave Desert. In 1993-1996, in various phases of LARSE I, teleseismic, airgun, local earthquake, and explosion data were collected along this line.
