Instructions for Presenters

Oral Presentations. Most oral presentations will be made using PowerPoint. Please bring your presentation on either USB or CD. There will be a room (Mesquite D) in the Desert Conference Center to check your presentation on a PC similar to ones in the technical sessions.

You should plan to be present at the designated room for your talk 30 minutes prior to beginning the session to load and check your presentation on the PC.

For low tech presentations, overhead projectors will be available.

Poster Presentations. Posters should be put up no later than Tuesday night in Ballroom East and Ballroom West. Posters will be available for the entire meeting. Poster boards are 120 cm high by 240 cm wide. (See floorplan.)

Exhibitors. Exhibits should be ready for display by Tuesday night. Exhibitors will be in the Ballroom Central. (See floorplan.)


General Meeting Information

The 2004 SSA Annual Meeting will be held at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs, CA.

Please note the following special talks (all will be held in Mesquite A/B):

  1. William B. Joyner Lecture by Lloyd Cluff at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

  2. Special Plenary Session by David Applegate on "Strengthening the USGS Hazards Program" on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

  3. Special Invited Talk by Vladimir Keilis-Borok on "Documented Prediction of the San Simeon Earthquake..." on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

  4. IRIS/SSA Lecture by David Wald on "Rapid Earthquake Information..." on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m.

Lunches on Wednesday and Friday are included in the meeting registration fee. There is a separate charge for the annual luncheon on Thursday.

Following the annual luncheon and presentation of the SSA medal to Raul Madariaga, Brian Tucker will give the SSA President's Invited Address.

For the Tuesday night icebreaker (starting at 6:30 p.m.), there will be plenty of food with both Mexican and seafood stations. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, there will be an evening social around the pool for an hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. with beer and wine.

Unless otherwise indicated, all activities will be held at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club

On-Site Registration: will commence in the Resort Lobby from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 13. Registration will continue at the Desert Conference Center from 7:30 am - 5:00 pm during the technical sessions on April 14 to 16.

Icebreaker Reception: will be held at the Main Pool Patio on Tuesday, April 13, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.

Opening Plenary Session: will be held Wednesday, April 14, at 8:30 am in Mesquite A and B.

Special Plenary Session: will be held Wednesday, April 14, at 5:00 pm in Mesquite A and B.

Oral Technical Sessions: will be held in Mesquite A and B, Oleander 1, and Oleander 3 on Wednesday, April 14 - Friday, April 16. See schedule herein for details.

Poster Presentations: Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Grand Ballroom.

Coffee Breaks: will be held in the Grand Ballroom.

Exhibits: will be on display in the central portion of the Grand Ballroom for the duration of the meeting.

Press Room: will be in the Celebrity Room adjacent to the Grand Ballroom East.

VillageFest: Thursday, April 15 from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm in downtown Palm Springs (Baristo Road to Amado Road).

Lunches: will be held by the Main Pool Patio on Wednesday, April 14, and in the Mediterranean Room on Friday, April 16.

SSA Annual Luncheon: will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 11:30 am - 2:00 pm in the Mediterranean Room. The SSA Medal will be awarded to Raul Madariaga with citation from Ralph Archuleta. The President's invited address, What Role Can the SSA and Its Members Play in Reducing Global Earthquake Risk? will be given by Brian Tucker, President, GeoHazards International. Award for Distinguished Service to SSA will be presented to John Ebel.

Evening Social: will be held on Wednesday, April 14 and Thursday, April 15 from 5:30 - 6:30 pm around the Main Pool Patio.

Closing Plenary Session: will be held in Mesquite A and B on Friday, April 16, 8:00 am - 9:00 am.

Field Trips: Precarious Rocks Field Trip will take place on Friday, April 16, from 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm. The San Andreas Fault Zone in the Indio and Mecca Hills, Southern California will take place Saturday, April 17, from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm.
