NOTES:

Problems were encountered while taking field measurements.
Highly weathered rock made it difficult to plot the fault trace or take measurements. Rock quality was much better in the eastern section of the fault.
Quaternary sediment often covered accessible areas, such as the wash channels. In places, it covered outcrop or the fault trace.
The fault trace was located on a steep, unstable slope. Loose sediment and steep slopes made climbing up to the fault very difficult.
A solution to these problems was to look at stereopairs of the aerial photographs previously shown. In the eastern section, the Quatal fault follows an angular unconformity between the Simmler and Caliente formations. The hanging wall contains steeply dipping beds (60-80 degrees), while the foot wall contains shallow dipping beds (20-40 degrees). This angular unconformity can be seen in the aerial photographs. The results and analyses will focus on the eastern section of the fault.
