2000 SCEC Intern Field Trip (Page 2)

Comments from the Interns on the Colloquium and field trip:

Alexandra Jordan
My experience at the SCEC Intern field trip was definitely an educational and enlightening experience for me. Being that I just completed my first semester of college I haven't had as much hands on experience as some of the other Interns. I haven't even taken a geology course and therefore my knowledge is limited compared to many others that attended. Though many of the terms I heard were foreign to me at the beginning, I found myself understanding almost everything towards the end of the trip. This was the first time I had been out in the field and it is amazing how much you learn when you have evidence and examples to back up information. My father, who is an involved scientist at USC and a member of the SCEC community, has stimulated my interest in Earth Sciences. He informed me that his first experience in the field was a job given to him by Jim Brune and well,..the rest is history. I found it ironic that this past weekend I stood next to Jim Brune, fascinated like my father was over thirty years ago, as he described precarious rocks at Lovejoy Buttes. Overall, the food was filling, the scenery was beautiful, and the experience was educational.

Great trip! I really enjoyed the field trip! It widened my understanding of California tectonics, seismicity and paleoseismicity. If was also a great opportunity to see more of my study area, the transverse ranges. Highlights of the trip: The Caltech Seismology Laboratory, the USGS presentation on the Trinet Shake Maps, Burro Flats trenches and Lovejoy Buttes. Downside of the trip: the heat. But after the112 degrees om Twenty Nine Palms, my weather will feel cooler! I would like to thank SCEC for sponsoring the field trip and Mark Benthien for planning the trip and friving us around the 700 miles!
