Frank Webb

SCIGN Scientist

Frank Webb, a member of the Satellite Geodesy and Geodynamics Systems (SGGS), is a lead member in the expansion of the Los Angeles GPS network for monitoring spatial and temporal strain signals in the LA area. He earned both his M.S. and PhD. from the California Institute of Technology and a B.A. in Geology from UC Santa Barbara, where he was involved in undergraduate science research and was an exchange student to the University of Bergen in Norway.

Frank is the Executive Committee Chairman and the JPL board member for SCIGN. In addition to his work in Southern California, he also is the JPL task manager for integrating JPL's GIPSY (GPS Inferred Positioning System) analysis software into the 1060-station Japanese GPS Network, is the principal investigator fort the NASA SENH Analysis of Tectonic and Volcanic Deformation in Iceland and Chile using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and is also involved in GPS studies of volcanic regions, including the Long Valley Caldera, California. He also is an analysis team member working on the routine analysis of GPS data from the FLINN network for precise orbit determination and plate motion studies. He is interested in the development of stochastic baseline estimation techniques for addressing high strain rate geophysical problems with GPS and development of routine GPS analysis software.

His current research includes developing kinematic GPS analysis techniques for application to both rapid surface topographic and deformation measurements, and aircraft positioning for interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) topographic measurements and laser altimetry measurements. He is also interested in applying GPS as a ground tool for evaluating remotely sensed topography. In addition, Frank also teaches short courses in the use of the GIPSY software.

Frank's sport interests include surfing, cycling, and ice hockey. While in graduate school, Frank played for three seasons on the Caltech ice hockey team and was on the team that won the Warden Cup in 1988.
