Ken Hurst

SCIGN Scientist

Ken Hurst has been a member of the technical staff in the Satellite Geodesy and Geodynamics Systems Group since 1990. He received a BA in Geology and one in Physics from Earlham College in Indiana and then went on to earn a MA and PhD in Geology from Columbia University.

Ken is involved in many GPS-related projects, including the Parkfield Rapid Static GPS experiment (which is measuring the crustal deformation around Parkfield with great spatial detail), work with the GIPSY-OASIS II analysis software, including teaching classes in the theory and use of the software, as well as modeling GPS data collected following the 1992 Landers and 1994 Northridge earthquakes.

He has also worked on a team which designed and implemented an automated processing system for the analysis of data from the network of 800-1000 GPS stations installed for the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan and is also involved in the design and implementation of an automated processing system for analysis of data from SCIGN.

Ken is a member of the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, the Seismological Society of America, and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. He has received numerous awards including a NASA Group Achievement Award for Global Positioning System Geodesy Development and another for development of the GIPSY-OASIS GPS analysis software, as well as being a co-recipient of a runner-up award in the 1995 NASA software of the year competition for his work with the GIPSY-OASIS software.

Ken is actively involved in teaching and volunteers once a week at a local high school. He is assisting with the physics class by designing and running the lab portion of the class. In his spare time, Ken is an American Youth Soccer Organization coach and a Cub Scout Webelos den leader. He is also a member and Training Officer for the Santa Clarita Search and Rescue Team and has been an Emergency Medical Technician since 1986.
